Ribeira de Oeiras Bridge on the EN2

The Ribeira de Oeiras Bridge is located on the EN 2, in the municipality of Almodôvar, district of Beja. The work of art, with a total length of 45.5 m, consists of three circular arches, in plastered brick masonry and closing staves in stone ashlar, with a free span of 10.0 m.

The existing deck has a total width of 6.2 m. The two pillars are made of shale masonry, about 2.4 m thick and 2.5 m high, and the encounters are in a vault. The tympanic walls are made of schist masonry, being extended in the encounters in avenue walls in the same material.

The Execution Project, as well as all the works associated with it, had as an initial assumption the expansion or replacement of the existing bridge. From the main inspection carried out on the work of art, it was found that the state of conservation is bad to very bad. From the analysis of the material characterization tests, it was concluded that, given the anomalies presented, the work under study lacks corrective rehabilitation measures. The structural analysis, based on the results obtained through calculation models developed using the RING and SAP2000 programs, confirms the option for repairing the existing deck and widening the deck.

For the extension of the Ribeira de Oeiras Bridge, the following works were planned:

- Build a new five-span monolithic structure, with an extension of 50.0 m, with:

  • Reinforced concrete deck, consisting of a wide rib and consoles, 9.8 m wide.

  • Lost type encounters with cockpit supported on pairs of uprights based on shoes;

  • Four intermediate rafters, located on the existing pillars and abutments and supported by micropiles.

- Repair the existing bridge through:

  • Slit injection;

  • plaster repair;

  • Reclosing joints and filling gaps in masonry;

  • plaster painting.
